Literature fans, you don't want to miss this upcoming Second Life event: As Chestnut noted in her NWN calendar, acclaimed novelist and MacArthur "genius" recipient Jonathan Lethem is appearing in Second Life this coming Sunday, at 6pm PST. [Direct SLurl to the theater here] As regular readers will recall, Lethem's latest novel, Chronic City, includes a virtual world directly inspired by Second Life. Here's my interview with Jonathan on writing and researching the virtual aspects of the novel. Appropriately enough, for his in-world interview, he's appearing as an avatar based on Perkus Tooth, a lead character from Chronic. His avatar name, of course: PerkusTooth Riddler.

I'm just at the part where Perkus is educating Chase Insteadman on vintage cinema while stoned on migraine medication, early on. No signs of virtual reality yet. Now I'm even more intrigued by the Chronic City. I wonder if the Avatar has Perkus's axe-like skull. Can't tell with the hat on. Thanks for this I'll bookmark it and come back to it once I'm done with the book. Clever idea for an interview, I must say.
