Over the weekend someone said they had read in my book about the giant beanstalk of Steller Sunshine, the first piece of user-generated content in Second Life, and wanted to pay a visit. Not having been there lately myself, I checked to see if it was still extant, and so it was: Located in the ancient region of Welsh, the beanstalk is actually a jumping game originally constructed by Ms. Sunshine in the pre-SL "Linden World" of 2002 (she was the first Alpha user, and she created it overnight her first day in-world), later imported into Second Life when it went Beta in 2003. And since that weekend reader wasn't the first to ask after it, let me post a SLurl footnote here:
Click this SLurl teleport link to see Steller Sunshine's beanstalk.
I'm always relieved to see it's still standing there, some eight years later. Many have visited since, but few, I imagine, have managed to complete the challenge Steller originally set for it: Without using flight, jump from leaf to leaf to the very top of the beanstalk (where heaven awaits.) Can you?
Was great to go and see it. Is nice to see a simple design that is so effective, and good that an important part of sl history is still there. Sadly jumping, or even flying, is something I'm not great at.

The oldest content I found was created by newbie_template_linden, not user created but dated 12/16/2002

So, is Ms. Sunshine still in SL? Who's the oldest still-active avatar, for that matter?
