Steff Ling's Second Life machinima "Coloured Pencils" is a hip and funky example of what you can do with in-world effects, created for an Australian electronica band called The Mollusk. Possibly unnecessary NSFW warning -- contains paint-spattered avatar nudity:
Because while you might think the bolts of animated color were created in post-production, they were actually built and scripted by poidowl Poikolainen within Second Life. "There was actually very little post done," Steff tells the SL Machinima Artist Guild, "just a mirror effect."
Great ^__^
You're welcome to grab a free copy of the pencil gun shown in the video (aka Crayon Katyusha or Sparacolori) c/o Chromutate, the colorful interactive installation I built in the LOL region:

note:
I didn't create Crayon Katyusha myself, I simply slightly modified its trail (I think in the video they're using my version, but I'm not sure).

Ah, the original crayon gun is brilliant.
But we needed something with more control. So a homing device that chases AV was added to the pencils, allowing me to direct them exactly where to fly. Also, because of homing device, the colour pencils last longer, and as the older part of the lights fades while new ones are created all at the same time, the illusion of a real time traveling light is created - all within SL.
