Here's an excellent local Denver news story on Fanny Starr, the Holocaust survivor who regularly visits Second Life to relate her first-hand account of enduring the Shoah as many of her loved ones were slaughtered along the way. I profiled her last year, but it's all the more powerful to see her testimony coming from the other side of the screen:
The clip comes courtesy of Helen Starr, Fanny's daughter, who organizes the SL appearances through her avatar, Explorer Dastardly, then lets her mother take over the controls, when she starts telling her story. Also gratifying that the news reporter, Nelson Garcia, understands why the medium of Second Life makes this more effective than 2D photos or non-interactive audio. His accompanying article for this segment is here.
While living in Denver I had the honor and privilege of caring for another holocaust survivor at the end of her life. This is very powerful testimony, and those few remaining who survive depend upon us to remember, and to continue to work to see that such a thing should never happen again.

The interview with Fanny itself is very worth watching too, and thank you for mentioning the 9News article here. It was just heart stopping to hear the Catholic School girls, young women 14 - 16 asking Fanny about her youth and experiences. It was something that could only have been facilitated as it was in Second Life.

At age 68 I have been priveleged to have met survivors.
My childhood friend's family had both those that escaped prior to the war as well as one that didn't. She was the only member of her immediate family to survive.
Sadly, their story too, will fade into history.
