Help Keiko Rock: All-Star Live Music Extravaganza To Raise Funds For Recording Keiko Takamura's First Album!

Bolstered by her featured appearance on MTV in 2006, the Second Life musician known as Keiko Takamura is one of SL's first breakout performers who started her career in-world. I've been a fan for much of that time, digging her smart, alt-geek writing skills (as in this song inspired by BioShock) and her ability to rock it well in both worlds (as in her mixed reality set at SLCC 2009 with her band, The Shebangs.) After many years of hard work, she and the Shebangs are finally ready to record their first EP album, but studio space is damn expensive -- especially if you're doing it where folks like Modest Mouse and Elvis Costello have recorded, as they are. To cover those costs, Keiko is holding a huge, one week live music fundraising extravaganza in Second Life, helped out by a lot of other musicians. But maybe I should let her explain the deal herself:

Keiko Takamura has been a Second Life live musician since 2006. She has played countless shows with both newcomers and well-known olbies such as Cylindrian Rutabaga, Juel Resistance, Frogg Marlowe & Jaycatt Nico, Maximillion Kleene, etc. She has also played numerous charity events for organizations such as Relay For Life, Toys For Tots, Make A Wish Foundation, Friends of the Urban Forest, Child's Play Charity, and so on. She has been an active member of the Second Life community and an advocate for Second Life in general. She met with Philip Linden (creator and then-CEO of Second Life) and has most recently been the postergirl for Second Life's "face2face" ad campaign.

She was featured on MTV News with Stephen Totilo (now of Kotaku) and is more widely-known for her appearance on MTV's True Life.

It has been a long uphill struggle, but in 2009 she formed a band called The Shebangs and started to play shows around the San Francisco Bay Area, including the 2009 Second Life Community Convention.

And now, after years of slowly trudging up the ranks, making music, making fans, Keiko and The Shebangs are finally ready to record a 5-song EP. The studio they want to record at has worked with bands such as CAKE, Modest Mouse, Elvis Costello, Teagan and Sara, Deerhoof, Death Cab... but it is PROHIBITIVELY EXPENSIVE.
