Gogo manages to capture some of the most beautiful avatar photographs (head shots in particular) I've ever seen. Nice brief tutorial.

I find that I still use a facelight much of the time ... problem is, everything is in the eye of the beholder, so to speak. You can look great in your own Windlight settings (and so can your friends), but you might not look great to them!

On another note, it would be nice if eventually region owners could choose Windlight settings the same way they can now specify time of day. The opportunities that would give high-end sim designers would be immeasurable.
