What's better than logging into Second Life with your iPhone? How about staying logged in while you use your iPhone to check new email, watch a YouTube video, or whatever? Pocket Metaverse, the iPhone/iPad app for accessing Second Life, was recently updated to run with OS 4 and iPhone 4, and comes with that very feature: multi-tasking. (Well, for the iPhone 3GS running OS 4 and the iPhone 4 -- if you only have a 3G, no multi-tasking joy for you.)
"[M]ultitasking lets you switch to different apps, like Safari or email or even take a phone call, and you'll stay connected to SL in Pocket Metaverse," co-creator Edward Magic tells me. A very useful feature, since you're unlikely to want to dedicate your entire phone (and attention) to running that one app. (You select the function in the Settings tab on Pocket Metaverse's launch screen.)
Also impressive is the app's fast user growth: Since going on sale last December, it's attracted 14K users. (And it was only up to 10K at the beginning of this May!) If it keeps growing at that rate, in a year or so we'll need to assume a significant minority of Residents regularly log into Second Life from their smartphone.
When I was first 'test driving' PocketMV (logging in via iPhone while Beginning was logged in on the laptop) I got a phone call somewhere in the middle of things and found myself logged out abruptly. It'll be nice not to have to worry about that risk in future--I found it quite useful for being able to carry on an IM conversation with my business partner while out and about seeing a band play at the 529.

It's very handy, and very workable on the iPad. There's one minor display bug (IMs don't always cause the screen to scroll properly) which I'm hoping they've fixed this version, but in general if you want to pop into SL with your iPad this is the way to do it.

(unfortunately, no multi-tasking for the iPad until iOS 4 for the iPad is released, which is still scheduled for 'Fall')

Hamlet,
Do you realize that most people do not have an Iphone?
I do not have an Iphone and I do not ever intend to buy one. This has absolutely no relavance for me and most potential SL users.
