Qarl's No Longer a Linden, But He's Still Coming to SLCC!

If you're going to the Second Life Community Convention this week, get a good look at this photo. No, not at the wooden dummy, the dude on the right:

That's Karl Stiefvater, who until very recently was known in Second Life as Qarl Linden, a 3D graphics developer who helped make The Matrix movies and was helping Linden Lab make mesh uploads, but was mysteriously fired last week. Despite that, Karl's still coming to Second Life's annual user convention.

"I don't really know why I'm going to SLCC-- it just feels like the right thing to do," he tells me. "Maybe I'll find some way to continue my work in Second Life. And it'll be nice to meet all the people I've worked with over the years."

It would rock to see his many innovations continue in Second Life, or failing that, any number of the spinoff projects other Lindens and Residents are now working on. In any case, if you aren't going to SLCC, be sure to say hello to Karl in Second Life, under his Resident "civilian" name: Qarl Fizz. (Now you can look at the wooden dummy.) And if you think it'll do any good (or just make you feel better), Indigo Mertel has started a petition asking Linden Lab to bring Karl back to the company.

Qarl deserves all my respect for this decision. I think it's great that he is not giving up. I really hope that some solution can be worked out. Losing so much enthusiasm and talent is just... not right.

Thanks for the update Hamlet. I first came across Qarl when he and Domino Marama were discussing sculpties in the old forum and JIRA as Domino and Gaia figured out what could be done with them and Domino built PrimStar and Gaia built JASS.

I would love to know what the powers that be at LL were thinking when they let Qarl go. Makes no sense to me. I wish Qarl the best.

I think that the greater OpenSim / 3d viewer / Grid community will find ways to make use of Karl's (and Jim Pubrick, and so many others) talents. Of course there is the caveat that they may be limited in what they are allowed to work on.

It's time for the community to assume the leadership role.
