Famed steampunk baron Desmond “the Guvnah” Shang is expanding his Caledon empire into Blue Mars (where I am a consultant), and there is much to write about the scope and ambitions of his plans. But first he tells me about the appeal of steampunk in virtual worlds: "[A]s opposed to the heavy drama, the naughtiness, all that, the wild time traveler from the past stands in stark contrast to everything overbearing and too serious in virtual worlds these days.” More here.

How does the Steampunk ethics work in Blue Mars? i thought you could not make content unless you was somewhat a pro? To me the biggest reason Steampunk has taken off so well in Second Life is because you are given the ability to tinker and build and become a master of your craft.

You don't need to be a pro, anymore than you do to make mesh for Second Life, some of the compatible software packages are free. In Caledon's case, several dozen steampunk builders are collaborating with Desmond. But that's another post. :)
