The Caledonian steampunk colony in Blue Mars (where I am a consultant) have learned to control time itself, with a device called Kronos, created by Ralph Doctorow (his avatar name both in Second Life and Blue Mars), using a brilliant flowgraph driven by Lua scripting. The goal is create a uniform chronological experience for anyone who visits their Blue Mars colonies, Caledonia and Pavonis. "Ultimately," Caledon leader Desmond "the Guvnah" Shang told me last week, "that timing should be able to control the shared experience of everyone seeing the same lighting... the same clouds in the same places, pseudo-random movements of animals, birds, fish and so forth -- and the train, of course, making its rounds on a schedule." Read more about it here.
