Good news for my pal John Lester, formerly Linden Lab's evangelist for education in Second Life: He's now Director of Community Development at ReactionGrid, the OpenSim-based world. Here's some of why:
They are focused on education and business while simultaneously understanding the value of the arts and entertainment. They are developing completely new platforms like Unity3D-based Jibe to broaden access to virtual worlds. And they are even working on ways of connecting virtual platforms with the physical world (sensors, robotics, machinery) and the internet in general.
Ham congrats to Path! Read the rest here. (Photo courtesy Pathfinder.)
Good on you, Pathfinder.

Teleportation on contact. Not just to another region, but to another grid.
Can you say brilliant?
Way to go!

It's all kinds of good that John is now with RG.
It's also nice to encounter a CEO and management team who recognize what *can* scale: hypergridding.
There was this "I have seen the future" moment when I first took an avatar through a hypergate.

Hypergrid all the way ... givien the theoretical size of such a connected grid I am almost ready to say, that there is little future in walled gardens like SL or BM. This is of course only theoretical idea, but not impossible to become reality.
