Mad Men season four ended last month, but thanks to New World Notes style columnist Iris Ophelia, you can take your love of the show into Second Life, with collections of fashion and customized skins she's compiled, to evoke the show's leading characters. Compare and contrast with stills from the show -- collect them all!
- Here's how to look like Betty Draper, for an evening in New York or a day of housewife drudgery interspersed with sex fantasies about the air conditioner salesman.
- Here's how to become a meteaverse Don Draper, suave in a hat or just a suit. Accessory tip: Add a customized emote that allows your Don Draper avatar to say "What" in several dozen different way.
- Who wants to look like Joan Holloway? I know: Who doesn't want to look like Joan Holloway? Of course, you'll also want to rock some Joan Holloway-worthy lingerie.
- And here's Joan's on-again, off-again lover, the slick silver fox Roger Sterling, complete with the cancer sticks that almost did him in. Iris had the hardest time creating a Roger Sterling avatar worthy of the name, since it's rare to find SL avatars older than 30, let alone 50.
- Megan is the latest lady in Don Draper's life, and for my money, Iris evokes the character almost perfectly.
- Dr. Faye Miller, my personal favorite of Don's women, though apparently Don ultimately didn't think so.
Finally, here's Iris' take on Peggy Olson, the heart and soul of the show, based on her look from the first season, when she still evoked her 50's bobbysoxer teen years, showing just a glimpse of the dedicated career woman and Don's closest confidante that she'd ultimately come.
And now that you have several avatars to choose from, consider buying some retro virtual furniture from the era of the show. Next season, as the show moves firmly into the 60s as we think of the 60s, I hope Iris can update these avatars as they'd look in 1966.
There's actually lots of worthwhile stuff going on in SL. What about a report on Peacefest or the forthcoming 16 days of activism against violence against women?
