Happy 2011, readers! To get started with this New Year, here's a look at the very most popular posts from 2010, with several noteworthy news items and amazing content, these 10 alone totaling up to well over 150K pageviews. Thanks to the StumbleUpon community (which in aggregate has fairly quirky taste), there's several oddball hits in this list. Counting down from number 10:
9 - Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation Establishes Licensing Agreement with Frank Lloyd Wright Virtual Museum in Second Life. Ironically, the Wright foundation suspended this license last month for reasons both sides dispute.
8 - As It Turns Out, Second Life Does Inception Better Than Inception Does Inception. Do not underestimate the power of an 8 foot furry penis (apparently.)
7 - Man Makes 8 Mile Minecart Rail in Minecraft & Beautiful Timelapse Machinima to Show It Off (October '10) Follow-up Minecraft machinima here.
6 - Breaking News: Blue Mars Launching Cloud-Based Option (April '10). This story, and the huge reception to it, is among the main reasons I became a consultant to Avatar Reality, the company behind Blue Mars. Which meant helping introduce the cloud trial demo video in November:
5 - Husband and Wife Researchers Create System That Sends Real Hugs Through a Virtual World.
Final four after the break!
4 - iPhone's "Pocket Metaverse" App Streams Second Life Parcel Media: Listen to Live SL Music On Your iPhone!. No idea why this one garnered about 15,000 pageviews, which is roughly about as many people as have actually bought this (very cool) app. Probably the SEO sexiness of anything iPhone, and also -- take note, iPhone developers -- an under-served market for Second Life-related apps.
3 - Nemo Rises: Awe-Inspiring Underwater Steampunk City Inspired By Jules Verne Opens Today!. Absolutely well-deserved. Sad to say, however, I had to write this update post: Nemo Sinking: Second Life's Jules Verne-ian Steampunk Masterpiece Closing on October 29!
2 - Philip Rosedale Attempting to Create Sentient Artificial Intelligence That Thinks and Dreams in Second Life! This is a project for Philip's new company, Love Machine. Curiously enough, there's a new Japanese movie about a sentient AI breaking out of a virtual world, and it's called... Love Machine.
1 - RU There: Feature Film About Second Life, Gaming, and Living Digitally Selected for the Legendary Cannes Film Festival This Year. By far New World Notes' most popular post (easily over 50K pageviews) is about a feature film where SL machinima is incorporated into the larger production. Yet another reason why I think machinima is Second Life's best mass market application. Far as RU There, last I heard it hasn't yet received a theatrical distribution deal. However, the DVD is available for rent on Netflix.
