Last month I mentioned the Second life machinima music video contest for Danish electronic pop group Giana Factory and their track "Pixelated Truth", and now the deadline has passed. All the entries are here, and below is my personal favorite entry by far, by Arbit Delacroix:
One of the most difficult shots, Arbit tells me, is one you see in the opening, of the alien woman running in slo-mo. Only she wasn't really shot in slow motion, but using a custom animation worthy of Hasselhoff:
"The run was done by moving the camera past while the avatar ran in place using the 'Baywatch' animation," says Arbit. The spinning videogame effect was no picnic either, he adds.
Pop Art Lab (the contest's co-sponsor) will select the official winners in a few weeks. (You can register your own favorite in Comments at the Pop Art Blog.) Meantime, more shooting details from Mr. Delacroix after the break, and a look at my personal runner up.
To shoot his version of Pixelated Truth, Arbit used the latest Second Life viewer. "[E]xcept the depth of field shots on the island. For that I used the Mesh Project Viewer. There's a bunch of WindLight settings used in there; Mescaline Tammas' 'Morning Glory', a variation of his 'London 2026' setting, some of Torley's great sunrise settings like 'Turtle Island' and 'Barcelon 1' and then a few custom ones for the fog, etc..."
Arbit, by the way, made this spectacular sci-fi trailer of a machinima he still needs to finish, and more pertinently, this official machinima video for a triphop group.
Oh yeah, here's my second favorite version of "Pixelated Truth", by Alfonso Kohn, heavy on the cyberpunk action:
Tyvm for ur vote Hamlet.
The jury consists of Rhett Linden, Toxic Menges and acclaimed RL film and musicvideo producer Adam Hashemi. U can read their bios here http://www.popartlab.com/news/announcing-our-pop-art-lab-machinima-2011-jury/

It's one of those songs that stick in your mind and the video is a wonderfully warm and fuzzy cocoon around it.
