Courtesy of Louis Platini's Metaverse Business, an SL-oriented company that gathers publicly accessible in-world data with bots for its clients, here's the current top 20 most popular sims in Second Life for February.
These are listed according to ranking, minimum number of visitors at any given moment, maximum number, average, and previous ranking in January. As is usually the case, chat/social gaming locations predominate, with 20% rated Adult (i.e. pornography and other extreme content.) On the other hand, tempura island, one of the most beautiful locations in Second Life in terms of virtual natural beauty, is a returning favorite. (Click button above to visit or Like it on Facebook.) There's also few newcomers to the Top 20: Infernal Ville, Platinum World, Crossroads, AMTS, and Ambrosia Dance Club. (And most of these were in the Top 50 the previous month.) That strongly suggests that Second Life community activity has largely remained static, with few rising sim stars to take on the established hot spots. For comparison, click here for December 2010's top 20 Second Life sims.
That picture is evil and stays sideways when I turn my iPhone to read it.

Tempura is a lovely sim. Nice to see it rated highly. I should visit again just to keep it ahead of more salacious spots :)

Tempura is a lovely place, but it's been a lagfest from day one (many many textures there; gorgeous ones, too). Unfortunately it's so popular now you can barely move most of the time because there are too many avatars there. Luckily I discovered it early on and got some nice photos. http://bit.ly/eqLgfJ

About Cidade do Medo (use Google Translate if Protuguese is not your strong suit) from 2008:

It's an RPG apparently, in case you wondered, a "world of monsters, angels, negromancers(?) etcetera. Here mine and Google's skills screech to a halt).

*Ahem*
It is with some embarrassment that I note that the comment I originally intended to add here ended up instead in the December story about the most popular sims . . . *blush*
Darn you and your confusing links, Hamlet!!!
Anyway, here it is again:
How many of these are RedZone sims, one wonders? I know of at least one that definitely is, and another that I am pretty certain also uses the system. All of that juicy datascraping swelling the size and value of the RedZone database!
One wonders how many of these would *remain* in the top 20 if it became widely known that their visitors were being scanned and harvested into a large off-world database outside of the jurisdiction of the LL ToS?

Ah - thanks for the heads up on the Portugese speaking sim! We get so many visitors who speak Portugese I love to find LMs I can pass out :)

Sometimes it seems like SL is turning into Orkut!

SL can not draw a completely round naked human bottom. When your potential new users are judging SL by AVATAR movie standards, where do u think you will rank? The bottom and not the squared off bottoms in SL, either.
SL-- Make people your highest goal and see you beat even Facebook. As it is now, forget it... only sex addicts in SL now.
bye bye SL
