My friends at Japanese metaverse developer Metabirds recently launched a heads-up display for Second Life users (which you can get for free here) which is sort of like Foursquare, the location-based check-in service/game, but for Second Life. Here's a video of how it works:
"Using our HUD," Metabirds' Naoyoshi Shimaya explains, "you can send 'Love' like 'check-in' to the sim, place, object and avatars in SL. And can become 'Captain' like 'Mayor' in Foursquare." I'm somewhat biased (Metabirds was a sponsor to this blog), but I do think some kind of Foursquare-like application is a great idea for Second Life, helping solve the "What to do I, where do I go?" problem that still daunts SL. Foursquare is a great solution for people who are out and about in a big city and want to meet up with friends, while also surfacing great locations via amount of check-ins.
On top of that, Metabirds is running a free L$/Japan disaster relief benefit. For every sim in Second Life where you become Captain, you get L$10, and the company will match the total amount with donations to Japanese disaster relief. So two extra reasons to try it out: Read more here.
This is a great idea.
