ColeMarie Soleil explores Second Life's arts scene for New World Notes
Retropolis is a wicked adventure-oriented sim run by Terra Volitant and Tricia Farella (pictured above) hiding gems and other treasures. When you first arrive at Retropolis, you land on the deck of a stormy ship lost at seanamed "La Gata Encantada", brought to life by Tricia. Misty waves crash over the deck as water rolls around the ship, causing it to sway in the waves while it pours down rain. Here's a machinima of the Retropolis experience:
After taking a moment to get used to your surroundings, you see a hanging lantern which beckons you to "Call the beast". Of course being me, I had to click just to see what would happen. Sure enough, after a few moments, tentacles from the sea monster sleeping beneath the ship rise up, as if to pull you under. So, after the monster decided I might be tasty, I decided to open the cabin door at the head of the ship and run away into the portal.
What I did not expect to find as I came through the other end of the magic door, was an entire underground faerie realm. I remember thinking: "Stormy pirate ship at sea, into faerie wonderland!". Once you follow the stairs after entering the very green and glowing fantasy dream, you will come to find a genie. This is your destination guide and teleporter helper.
I do not want to ruin the adventure for you, but I will leave you with one last teaser shot. Come explore and make sure you have a bit of time set aside. This is a place quite worth a serious exploration. Desert Hideouts, Faerie Caverns, Stormy Seas ... Troll Caverns, Hidden Witches. There is much to discover. This place has it all!
