Inara Pey of Modem World has a extensive review of Radegast, a "light client" third party SL viewer for Windows and Linux intended for use when you can't use the resource heavy, attention taxing full version. At the moment, it's text only, but Ms. Pey points out a very interesting feature that'll be added to Radegast soon: a 3D Scene Viewer (pictured above), which gives you a basic view of SL. "This is quite simply stunning," she writes, "even in the pre-release mode. Simply put, it gives you a window on what is going on around you in-world." Looks very promising. See more about it on the Radegast blog here, which has this early demo video below:
"You can pan, zoom, and move around the image, see other avatars moving around, and your own avatar will respond to your use of the movement keys in the Chat window," writes Inara. When it comes out, I'm totally down.
A lot of innovation seems to be going on, and none of it from Linden Lab

Perhaps Radegast can become the client of choice for older computers and netbooks, so LL can concentrate on other things.

I believe this is a really important development - much more so that SpotON3D's stuff. This could really be what SL needs to expand it's reach.

Very usefull indeed!
But nothing like a top notch desktop computer to enjoy fully SL.
I know, many cant afford it, but the difference it makes is that you will not want to leave Sl, never!
And being with someone that used to have a 4 year old computer and was restricted to be on our homestead (and how she managed to buld, the way she did, still wonders All that visit our place) I can testify that a brand new one makes wonders:)
