According to SocialBlade, a service that estimates YouTube channel revenue based on total views and subscribers, the Machinima channel is earning up to $8.6 million in yearly ad revenue. (Screen cap at left.) I'm not too familiar with SocialBlade, but that does seem like plausible revenue, taken as it is from a reported 3,438,584 subscribers and 110,222,922 total channel views. It's also another datapoint for a point I've made before in other contexts: machinima is a mass market medium. To gain that amount of revenue, Machinima aggregates a lot of videos taken from many games, and has a lot of diverse content (comedy sketches, game reviews, some narrative, etc.)
Interestingly, the official Second Life YouTube channel is, according to SocialBlade, only making about $3000 a year. I bet if the channel had much more diverse machinima content besides official SL commercials, it would have a lot more viewers and revenue (he broadly hinted to the Lindens reading this.)
The Lindens can read?
