Iris Ophelia's ongoing review of virtual world and MMO fashion
The long awaited season premiere of AMC's Mad Men aired last Sunday, and a memorable moment from the episode has gone absolutely viral this week. At Don Draper's birthday party, secretary-turned-second-wife Megan Draper treats Don (and us) to a pretty striking performance of Gillian Hills' adorable french pop song "Zou Bisou Bisou" (check it out here). It's a little awkward, a lot sexy, and whether you love Don's new wife or hate her, this song really gets stuck in your head.
I made a Megan avatar in Second Life as part of my Mad Men avatar series, so I couldn't resist the opportunity to play dress-up with one of my favourite virtual dolls once again. Keep reading for all the details, mes chères!
- I started with the Megan shape that I made a year an a half ago. To get the perfect fresh-faced mod look for Megan, I upgraded her skin to the latest release from Dutch Touch, eSmEE [Click here to teleport to DUTCH TOUCH]. Then I applied Fishy Strawberry's Nude Lipstick and Temptress Eyeliner layers, both of which are available dirt-cheap at The Dressing Room for a limited time [Click here to teleport to The Dressing Room in THIS WAY].
- It was a little tricky finding the perfect hairstyle, but with some light modification this messy bob from D!VA, called Chika4 (Type A), is nearly perfect [Click here to teleport to D!VA in CALANDIVA]. Their dark brown tone is also fairly close to Megan's hair color, but a little careful tinting brings it closer.
- Megan's dress was pretty tricky to replicate. The flowing, sheer, pleated sleeves would be very difficult to make with prims and no mesh designer has done anything quite like it either, so I had to improvise. I used the Reeves dress from coldLogic [Click here to teleport to coldLogic in ZYRRA] as a starting point, since it's loose and flowing with fabric mirroring the original dress, then I layered it with a sheer shirt from Nyte'N'Day [Click here to teleport to NYTE N DAY]. None of these elements had the same rhinestone-studded cuffs or collar as Megan's dress, so I added a diamond tennis necklace and bracelets set from EarthStones [Click here to teleport to EarthStones in EARTHBOUND]. It's not perfect, but I'd say the overally effect still captures the spirit of the original!
- I've chosen a basic pair of seamed stockings from N-Core (honestly because they were at the top of my inventory). Really, any sheer black tights will do, I can't say I'm picky about them (for once!). [Click here to teleport to N-Core in HEELS]
- For shoes, I picked the Classic Platform Pumps from Gos' Pimp Your Pumps line, though they're a bit bolder than Megan's pumps [Click here to teleport to GOS]. I love the Pimp Your Pumps products because they're very versatile, allowing you to tweak colours and settings on them to suit your tastes and your outfits.
- I snapped up the inexpensive Vintage D 310 silver microphone, similar to the one Megan uses in her performance, from Island Music Store on the Second Life Marketplace [Click here to visit their store on the Marketplace] to add that extra bit of accuracy. I will admit that the cord is a somewhat sloppily Photoshopped in-- I just couldn't ignore the slightly too modern wireless look, and cords generally don't look quite right when made in-world.
- Finally, I rather shamelessly ducked into { what next }, one of my favourite furniture stores, and took a few snapshots in front of their retro living room set Sofia [Click here to teleport to what next in HODGEPODGE]. It was just too perfect (no matter how guilty I felt about using a store like my personal studio!)
I'll admit that this outfit was a huge struggle for me to put together, but I'm pretty pleased with the results. Here's hoping that this season of Mad Men has many more fashionable moments for me to recreate in SL!

I like how the microsoft floats underneath her hand.

You nail Mad Men again, perfectly, Iris. Brava!
I'm still wearing my "Don Draper suit" to edu-meetings, too. Cannot thank you enough for that fashion tip. Sadly, the maker went out of business and left SL.
