Click here if you're an academic who studies virtual worlds -- it's the homepage to SLACTIONS, an interational conference in November that will be held in SL and in several real world locations this November, and has an open call for papers to present then. As the homepage says, they're looking for papers not just pertaining to Second Life and OpenSim, but other virtual worlds and MMOs:
"The conference focus is scientific research on applications and developments of these metaverse platforms: Habbo Hotel, IMVU, Second Life, OpenSimulator, Open Croquet, Activeworlds, Project Wonderland, and others, including MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft, and virtual worlds based on social networks, such as *-ville and others, providing a forum for the research community to present and discuss innovative approaches, techniques, processes, and research results."
Go here to find out how to get involved and join SLACTIONS' Facebook page for updates.

I hope the Lindens don't "ownership" of the letters S and L.
On the other hand, the conference would "count" as a "real" conference with evaluators and those giving travel grants for at least two reasons: 1) It can be attended in the real world and 2) It looks selective in who gets accepted to present.
Thanks for the tip!

Iggy that is why SLACTIONS it's in capital letters. Read as "Selections" and not "SL" "Actions" :)
