Here's a good guide for getting an OpenSim world on a USB stick, thanks to Tateru Nino, so you too can put a portable single-user metaverse in your pocket. Also read Ener Hax's review of which kind of USB works fastest for deploying sims on sticks, and these notes from John "Pathfinder" Lester, who describes their advantages for educators in particular. The first link comes via Rodion Resistance, who was inspired by yesterday's post on using a USB-based OpenSim for retail store layout and training. There's probably many more real world use cases for stick-based OpenSims that are far more effective and practical than having to install and log-in to the full, online, broadband-dependent, heavy-client version of OpenSim or Second Life.

Tateru's version may well be out-of-date. I think ener hax's iliveisl.com blog is currently the definitive source.

Try http://simonastick.com for a collaborative effort on a great version of the stick! Look at the "blog posts" link to see a video of choosing one 256 meter, one megaregion, or four 256 metre regions and on how to create accounts
Sim-on-a-stick can even be setup as a community grid for a classroom!
