Click here to pre-order Patterns, Linden Lab's upcoming physics-enabled, 3D building, Minecraft-style game that Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson told me "Looks great!" For $10, you can pre-order the "Genesis version" of the game, when it's released on or before October 5, and get "all subsequent updates up to and including version 1.0, that we expect to release next year." If you're a Minecraft fan, you'll probably recall that's pretty much how Notch released that game, selling it in early Alpha back in 2010, which at the time was considered pretty daring. (I interviewed Notch that year, but now that he's a game god, I'm lucky to get a two word e-mail from him.) It's interesting that Linden Lab, a long established tech corporation, is now following Notch's footsteps.
Anyway, if you do order the Genesis version, please share in Comments, and prepare to share your experiences of the new and early world. In the future, I plan to write about Patterns much more. (I named this blog New World Notes for reasons just like this.)

If LL had not bait and switched me twice before already, I'd consider it. I'll wait for things to settle and an actual deliverable be finished first, then decide if I want to buy. I will try to keep an open mind about the program itself when they are done.

Is this what the steam deal was all about? Valve couldnt have Minecraft in steam, so they hired LL to make a ripoff? Looks cool though and hope it is!

Whatever... LL won't have my money. No Linux version.
As for Steam, who really want this spyware which does nothing but to get in your way when you want to launch a game? Bleh!
I really hate everything. [/rant]

I've preordered it, now I have given up my sim, I still want to support LL, and give them a chance. Plus I am sure it will be interesting to play with machinima wise.

Pre-ordered. I'll give it a try.

Im sure I will throw my money at this, but really, Linden Lab is missing a huge opportunity to legitimize their own platform, but not making Creatorverse and Patterns accessible via the Second Life PLATFORM. FAIL

I'm amused that a product with far fewer capabilities than Second Life requires a higher level of system specification to run it.

Bought it before I checked my Mac's system reqs. Not enough processor speed!
As P.T Barnum said, There's one born every minute!
I could have had a really nice Martini for that $9.95.
I'll put it on a desktop and give it a go. And probably not try it more than a few times. If it is not on a laptop (and in the case of my students, even more so) it may as well not exist. And no, I won't go out and buy another laptop just so I can run Patterns.
What on earth are the Lindens thinking? LL has made yet another horrid mistake, of many.

I'll remain for gear to clear up and an concrete deliverable be complete earliest, then make your wits up if I covet to get.

Will preorder this when I get home tonight. Thanks for the heads up.

(By the way, calling Steam spyware is a good way to sound old.)
Posted by: Adeon Writer | Monday, September 24, 2012 at 09:59 AM
-High fives @Adeon Writer- Lol, Exactly what I was thinking. I don't have a Minecraft addiction so I doubt I'll get a "Patterns" one either. Only criticism is the name, pushing a generic name like that is a bad move marketing wise in a world of key word searches. If down the road there is a bridge or whatever from SL great. If it makes LL more solvent, great.

Riisu - just configure Steam so that it only turns on when you start a game (rather than whenever you turn on the computer) and there's no way it can "spy" on you or otherwise do anything you don't want.
It's no more spyware than the apple App store on my phone is spyware.

Yes, Patterns is here. Go to steam and download, ( if you have prepaid ).
I have tested Patterns for some hours now and i like it. This can be Lindens future.

If this attracts the fun-repelant gold farmers and landlords that second life attracts, I promise this thing will be dead in the water in months.
Unfortunately being linden labs they'll probably stick an in-game currency in, ban the creatives as "greifers" and start advertising it as a boring job instead of a game.
