GameMaker: Studio is a new product on Steam that's among the first creative software products Valve is offering on its online distribution network (as promised last month). According to Indie Game Reviewer (where I first read this news), "GameMaker was used to create early versions of [indie hits] Derek Yu’s Spelunky and also Koya Rift among many others." It's a cross-platform development suite, so you can make casual and social games for Steam Workshop, as well as iOS, Android, desktop and the Web (HTML5), and has monetization options built in. I haven't seen it in action yet (and if you have, please discuss in Comments), but at the very least, it's worth noting from the perspective of Second Life coming to Steam soon. Linden CEO Rod Humble has said the idea is to attract gamers who like Garry's Mod and other sandbox/creation toys.
But as we see with GameMaker, SL won't be the only development platform Steam users can choose from. It'll be interesting to see which is preferred by the userbase.
