Iris Ophelia's ongoing review of gaming and virtual world style
If you're eager to check out the next big event in SL (or just interested in some fresh eye candy to brighten your morning) look no further than Fantasy Faire 2013 and the three awesome posters made by a team of SL artists to advertise it. Check out all the details after the cut!
There are three posters for Fantasy Faire 2013 on organizer Elizabeth Tinsley's Flickr stream, but the one shown above is by far my favorite. The posters are a collaboration between Tamzin Xiglia, Alia Baroque, and Marcus Inkpen, and each one features eye-catching fantasy characters (including elves and mermaids) interrupted by an unsuspecting human in plain clothes... Which is usually how I feel when I drop by Fantasy Faire myself.
What really makes these posters shine is that, even though there's a lot of post-processing, they actually show Second Life images. It's so bizarre when posters advertising big shopping events like this (or even stores and brands) feature clip-art, stock images, or even pictures taken from DeviantArt. If your event is promising to make me look fabulous and dress me up in all the most gorgeous virtual goodies, show me some of them! Don't just show me clip-art of a silhouetted lady putting on lipstick or something, it just looks lazy. If you're organizing an event or a fair, do me a favor: Ditch the stock photos and hire someone awesome like any of the artists behind these, because they'll hook you up with eye-catching art that actually tells me something about your event.
As you can probably see from the poster, Fantasy Faire will be running from April 20th to the 28th. What you may not know is that Fantasy Faire is also one of Second Life's largest and most popular annual Relay for Life fundraising events, and there are few things I love more than fashion for a good cause, so be sure to visit the Fantasy Faire blog for more info!

Very excited to be taking part this year (as FATEwear) - even sponsoring the event :)
The posters are really wonderful, my favourite is the one headlining this post.

I agree that SL advertising should look like this...however it would give new people the wrong impression. Each one of those avatars took a lot of work, sometimes years of work (learning the platform, developing style etc).
People don't want to come into the world and work for it. They want it out of the box. Which is why SL is filled mainly with people who can self-start and don't bore easily. The things I can do now in SL, I couldn't the day I first entered, or the first week, first month even the first year. There is a lot of learning required in SL.
