Iris Ophelia's ongoing review of gaming and virtual world style
A couple months ago I wrote about Splintered Rock, an interactive webcomic influenced by Dune and shot in Second Life using a cluster of truly magnificent and gritty sci-fi sims. What makes it so innovative is that the story develops based on several different kinds of interaction that readers can have with creator Darren Green, including polls and the use of tokens to bolster the stats (and therefore survival chances) of their favorite characters.
It's a neat concept and it's pretty well executed, but it's not all smooth sailing either. Projects like this don't create themselves, and Chapter 1 proved to be a pretty time-consuming endeavour. That's why Splintered Rock needs your help...
Green recently started a Kickstarter to help support Splintered Rock, with a very reasonable goal of £350, so that he can afford to take the time off to work on the next chapter of the story without starving himself in the process.
I'll admit that like a lot of people I'm starting to get a bit of Kickstarter-exhaustion. It seems like everyone has a Kickstarter or an IndieGoGo campaign for something, eventually it all sort of blurs together. But with such a modest target for such a unique project, it's definitely worth considering. If you're keen on supporting the arts in SL and/or just as keen on seeing more SL sci-fi content out there, you should absolutely consider donating. You even have the opportunity to be in the comic yourself, if you'd like, thanks to the different tiers of rewards for project backers. Just remember that the clock is ticking: Splintered Rock's Kickstarter campaign ends on May 1st.
