"Escape" is used to encode the javascript characters so that is just a programming thing. It could be someone is using a bookmarklet to force your page to always open in a new tab or browser window.

Thanks! That might make sense, but I'm seeing this code hundreds of times a day, consecutively. So either lots and lots of people are using a bookmarklet at the same time or (I guess) it's reflecting and automated process of some kind.

... or it's an attack. You might be able to talk to the Typepad guys and see if they can provide you with an IP address log of those locations and see if they are suspect...

It certainly doesn't look nice to me.
