Rod Humble Becomes Cardboard Cutout Second Life Meme

Linden Lab CEO Rodvik Humble has his own Wikipedia entry, has worked with game design legend Will Wright, has created several acclaimed art games, but he never attained true notoriety until he became an epic meme: Meet Flat Rodvik, a cardboard cutout of Rod Humble's Second Life avatar who is adventuring through SL's blogosphere, showing up in strange settings, many quite romantic, which should tell you something (and I think it does).

A meme from the mad making of Strawberry Singh (who else), Humble's cardboard cutout has appeared in dozens of SL blogger posts, which you can check out in the comment thread of Ms. Singh's original meme-unleashing blog post. So far, my favorite is this one from Chaotic Virtuality, in which virtual Rod Humble visits virtual recreations of historical landmarks, carried from place to place on a virtual hot date. Unsurprisingly, most of the SL bloggers who've embraced the Flat Rodvik meme are women in Second Life's large fashionista community, which is easily the most active in SL. He's gone on so many dates, Rod Humble himself was inspired to post a comment in Strawberry's comment thread:

"I suspect the flat me is a FAR more interesting date than the real me." Which may be so, though as it turns out, Wikipedia tells us this isn't the first time Rod Humble has showed up in a 3D simulation:

"An NPC (non-player character) in the Sims 2 expansion pack, FreeTime, is based on Humble. He is seen delivering a gift to new home-owners, the gift always being a computer, the computer having a sneak preview of the Sims 3." Sounds like the start of a new Flat Rodvik post.
