Last night I was wandering familiar places in Second Life, when a familiar name appeared upon my screen: Her name was Night, and years ago, she wrote a popular New World Notes column called Night Moves which you really should read. And then suddenly, for years ago or so, to the concern of many, disappeared from the virtual world, with little trace of where she'd gone, or why. I worried the worst (as I often do), but now just as suddenly, she's back in Second Life.
"Well," she tells me, "it's more than premature to say that I'm back. But I'm here tonight for the first time in forever for the silliest reason."
And this is what that is:
"My sons are playing Tomb Raider," she tells me (the new one, I assume). "The graphics are astounding. I watched them playing for a while, watched Laura Croft... and I missed Night. Though I'll have to say, Night looks a lot clunkier than i remembered." That's probably because of all the updates since she was gone, I suggest, but she hesitates to update herself: "I can't imagine not having my face," as she puts it. "I've had it since just after my first login."
As for why she left: "I was getting sucked in. But at the same time, SL just didn't have as strong a relational hold. I was getting out of balance with my time and my thoughts, yet most of the people I had been closest to before [in SL] were gone." Then came an IRL family emergency (that worked out for the best), "and I was out all that time...and I just decided not to come back."
So there it is, but here she is. "So you may be back from time to time?" I ask.
"I don't know. I have the bandwidth right now. LOTRO has for years been my SL methadone program, but it's sucking right now. So, who knows? I'll go look around. Maybe I can make a friend. none of my friends seem to log in anymore." I mention that I still log in for one -- and then I log off, leaving Night by the side of the waterfall to go find other friends.

It's nice to see Night is still out there, even if it's just once in a while. :)
