Janine "Iris Ophelia" Hawkins' ongoing review of gaming and virtual world style
If you've ever wanted to try your hand at modding The Sims but have never had the courage, this post might be for you.
Modder Sushigal007 released a couple modest little mods that tweak two traits in The Sims 4 -- the "Bro" trait is now the slightly less abrasive "Wanker", while original trait "Insane" (which could be considered ableist) has been defused to "Eccentric". Even if you're not interested in altering either of those traits, Sushigal's post also explains how to make your own mods to change "strings" from the game (meaning changing existing game text to say something else). With the right tools, the process is surprisingly simple. She explains:
Fancy having a go at changing some strings too? Perhaps you want to change the Mean trait to the Asshole trait, or rename WooHoo to Shag Like Bunnies or Tell A Joke About Dicks instead of Ducks. To do so, you’ll need to use S4PE to export the .stbl data from Strings_ENG_US.package (usually found in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\The Sims 4\Data\Client folder) and edit it with TS4 STBL Editor found here. Once edited, simply right-click the package, replace the .stbl data and save it as a new package in your Mods folder. I don’t recommend saving over the original, you never know when you might need it again.
Thanks to Sushigal's straightforward explanation I have my own mod in the works, which will replace the "Troll teh Forums" action with something infinitely less obnoxious. The only downside of modifying these game strings is that any other mods doing the same will cause a conflict, so if you want to use Sushigal's tweaks alongside your own you'll need to combine them yourself. Not ideal, but not exactly the end of the world, either.
