Janine "Iris Ophelia" Hawkins' ongoing review of gaming and virtual world style
Maybe it's your turn to stay home handing out the candy. Maybe you want to take the kids trick-or-treating, and won't be back in time to go out. Maybe you have a costume idea so fatastical that only the virtual world can do it justice.
Maybe you just don't want to deal with a swarm of drunken people in oh-so-clever, oh-so-sensitive Ebola doctor costumes.
Regardless of why you're logging in to Second Life on Halloween, there will be a ton of things going on to keep you busy -- sims to visit, fairs to shop at, performances to attend, contests to win... It would be nearly impossible to do a complete round-up of them all. Instead, I've picked out a handful of the best events and destinations for you to check out on and around Halloween weekend and, naturally, an opportunity for you to share your own.
Keep reading for more!
Halloween Town [Teleport]
If you're looking for a slightly more vibrant, cartoonish place to visit, Halloween Town is a great place to start. It draws its inspiration from the Tim Burton classic The Nightmare Before Christmas, and is jam-packed with with seasonal shops in case you need to put the finishing touches on your virtual costume.
Halloween at Pacifique [Teleport]
As you can see in the video embedded above, Pacifique has been loaded up with Halloween decorations this month, making this the perfect destination for artists and bloggers looking to make any spooky last-minute additions to their Flickr gallery.
The Smithsonian Dia De Los Muertos Festival [Teleport]
If you're looking to broaden your horizons a bit beyond the most hyper-commercialized sides of the season, you may want to visit The Smithsonian Dia De Los Muertos Festival. They'll be hosting an array of events from poetry readings to costume contests and dancing, all to celebrate the Day of the Dead.
And don't forget the shopping...
Naturally there are loads of shopping events going on now as well. For example, the Cosmetic Fair Halloween Edition [Teleport] is an ideal choice for avatar fashion junkies looking that flawless finishing touch for their outfit. If your Morticia Adams lipstick is not the perfect shade of red, or if you're looking for a few ghoulish scars to freshen up your Frankenstein('s Monster) ensemble, this should be the very first place you check. There are also plenty of hunts going on as well, including Just for Kids' Halloween hunt specializing in items made for Toddleedoo avatars, and the Happy Halloween Hunt which is stocked with full-perm prizes ideal for current and aspiring content creators.
If you're looking for even more to do tonight, tomorrow and through this coming weekend, you'll absolutely want to spend some time sifting through the "Haunted" category of the Second Life Destinations Guide. There you'll find nearly a hundred different scary spots to visit, ranging from your standard haunted house to dungeons, forests, and entire towns. If it's the fairs and hunts that do it for you, be sure to check out Seraphim for links and guides to the dozens of Halloween-themed shopping events going on right now. And of course, if you have your own pet event or destination that you'd like to plug, feel free to share it in the comments below!
