"and looks to be the first consumer-level virtual reality HMD available on the market at a mass market level"

Rather, one of the first. Samsung's announcement, which came at the start of the week, is around a week or two after Zeiss announced the availability of their $99.00 Zeiss VR-One HMD, which will initially support the iPhone 6 and Samsung Galaxy S5.

Not in the same category as the Gear VR (although that is still rooted in DK1 tech, head tracking wise), but it is still a wireless VR HMD.

I covered both following Samsung's announcement:

That's why I said "available on the market at a mass market level". Samsung is one of the world's top brands and device manufacturers.

Can't resist a jab at Samsung, "one of the world's top brands and device manufacturers."

Just don't buy a French-door, bottom-freezer fridge from them. Many complaints reported about poor evaporation and freezing. I have to defrost mine under the deli trays every other month. Samsung refuses to acknowledge this engineering flaw.

Maybe Samsung will do better with VR. I will buy a $100 rig when a more advanced and smaller unit works on iOS and, preferably, OS X.

This could really change gaming, even face-to-face; we have a virtual participant in our weekly Nerd Nite, and it would be great to transcend the boundaries of a laptop's cam. That would mean another piece of hardware on our end, some sort of 360-degree camera to enable seeing all our smiling faces in 3D.

But I'm no longer an early adopter. Only had a smart phone for a year.

This is really going to be interesting seeing how Samsung plays this card with being first out.

Next year Sony is launching their "Morpheus" PS4 headset and we finally can get our hands on the "Occulus", finally the future tech is almost within reach!
