Now that Iris has shared her favorite NWN posts for this year, here are the ten most popular New World Notes posts based on traffic, social sharing, and reader conversation (arranged in rough chronological order:
- 7 Questions on the Future of Second Life & Linden Lab for Ebbe Altberg, Linden's New CEO (February)
- Versu's Epilogue: How an Interactive Fiction Pioneer's 15 Year Project Ended Up in Limbo at Linden Lab (March)
- Second Life Isn't Dead (Yet) -- But SL's Strongest Supporters Need to Know Its Survival Is Now at Stake (May)
- BREAKING: Linden Lab Confirms It's Building New Virtual World "Far Beyond What is Possible with Second Life" (June)
That last post, as regular readers can probably guess, was by far the most popular this year (and just as obviously, the most important). Here's the rest of the top ten:
- Watch This High Fidelity Avatar Animated by a Pixar Vet Imitate Real World Facial Movements in Near Real-Time (August)
- Despite Little Growth in Bitcoin Usage, Leading VC Marc Andreessen Still Bullish on Virtual Currency (August)
- Second Life Viewer Compatible With Oculus Rift's DK2 (September)
- 1st Feature Film for VR Created by 2 Metaverse Alumni
- Why Second Life 2 Shouldn't Allow Porn at Launch, as Explained by a Single Viral Post (November)
And the post above is a great place to end this list, because in 2015, we'll definitely be talking a lot about what Second Life 2 needs to succeed.
Please share this post:
Second life 2 only needs to be like second life 1 to succeed. Sl will be going into its twelfth year, which is somewhat of a record as far as on-line 'games' go.
I hope they call the new version 'Second Life'. It would we weird to call it something else, like re-branding Coke.
Linden Lab provide a unique platform for story telling.
Have a great 2015 Hamlet and co, and I look forward to another year of articles from NWN.

@Kyouko: I really think it's a bot, because both Iris and I write very frequently about Minecraft and about how much larger it is than SL and OpenSim. (In fact, this blog is the first media outlet to interview Notch years ago, when Minecraft was still in Beta.) So it must be a bot that doesn't actually read the blog. That, or a totally uncivil person who's never been to a cocktail party:

@Hamlet:
Unfortunately, this is not a bot, but a confused spammer who does not realize how ridiculous his comments are. Do you have any way to prevent this griefing via IP block?
However, I wish you and your readers a Happy New Year!

The announcement of "new SL2.0" is literally killing the real SL. Creators don't want to make anything for just another year; buyers don't want to buy anything they can't use after June 2016... sims are downsizing or vanishing altogether... the Lab hasn't announced anything about the new platform and the old one slowly grinds to a halt... Hamlet, get ready for your new book "Meshing with Your Golden Goose: The Rise and Final Fall of Linden Lab".
