Janine "Iris Ophelia" Hawkins' ongoing review of gaming and virtual world style
I don't know that I've ever been more in love with a Collabor88 line up than I am this month. This popular event (which opens its doors with fresh content on the 8th of every month) always boasts a stable of talented designers, but inspired by this month's theme they've produced some of the most eye-catching releases I've seen in a while.
Every piece at this month's Collabor88 is inspired by unicorns, either concretely or in spirit, and the end result is downright magical.
Unicorn Heels from Violent Seduction
One of the big draws to Collabor88 are the prices. Most designers price their items a fair bit lower than they would if they released them in their own store, usually following the event's '88' motif. the vast majority of what you can buy there, including everything on my list today, are either L$88 or L$188. The idea of snagging these ornate heels for L$188 is practically obscene; but you can, which is why they're at the absolute top of my shopping list.
But these are not your every day, going-to-the-market shoes (unless you are an actual fairy princess, that is). If you're looking for something just a tiny bit tamer, Collabor88 January is also hosting the Cora heels from fri.day. They play on a similar pastel palette, feature elegantly wrapped ribbon ties, and ring in at the exact same price.
Betty Boudoir and Gown from Junbug
Junbug is rapidly becoming one of my favorite brands in Second Life, particularly due to their penchant for blending old-fashioned, old-world designs with contemporary ones. This set is a pretty good example of that aesthetic and comes in several different texture variations.
On the other hand, if you'd prefer to ditch the corsets and bloomers but still want to wear an utterly fabulous dress, these Unicorn dresses from Pixicat feature metallic unicorn prints, and each dress comes with both silver and gold variants. They're a total steal at L$88 apiece.
Pinkie Blouse and Celestia Flounce Skirt from The Secret Store
Maybe you'd like to show your appreciation for the noble unicorn is a slightly more casual way. No fancy dresses, no wicked heels, just some slightly more wearable unicorn-inspired fashions. In that case, The Secret Store's blouses and flounce skirts are a solid choice. The lace overlay on the blouse means it would be an easy piece to dress up or down, while the skirts... Well, just zoom in on that delicately scalloped hem. You have to appreciate the detail that Maylee Oh puts into her pieces.
I also appreciate the way that the unicorn horn was incorporated into Decoy's Drisana tank. Not everyone wants to walk around like a Lisa Frank binder come to life (though that sounds pretty good to me) so items like this tank are a great way to work an unconventional theme into a more conventional wardrobe.
Unicorn Cameo Ring, Necklace and Head Chain from Yummy
I'm terrible eager to see what Second Life's many stylish fantasy avatars and RPers will be doing with Yummy's Unicorn head Chain, not to mention the Majestic Unicorn Mask from Noodles. In every event there are a few items that really stand out, that you know people will be asking you about whenever you wear them, that you'll have to awkwardly (or smugly, depending on your personality) deliver some bad news about. It's the double edged sword of exclusive items. I suspect people will be asking after these pieces for a while, so you'd be wise to pick them up while you can.
Rainbow Decor Set from Intrigue Co.
Collabor88's not all about the fashion, though. There's a pretty strong complement of home items every month including furniture and prefab buildings. This month, Intrigue Co. kind of steals the show with their hyper-colorful set, and I imagine it'll be a must-have for the SL family scene, not to mention regular SL shoppers with particularly colorful tastes. Even if I don't know where I'd ever place it myself, I can still appreciate the design of the chair in particular; if it were real, it would probably be the most Pinterest-ed deck chair on the face of the planet.
You can see more of what's available at Collabor88 this month through their convenient catalogue, or visit the event in-world [Teleport] for yourself.
