Interesting stats from SimilarWeb, on social network traffic to SecondLife.com:
Yes, Facebook is the source for the majority of social network traffic. This data contradicts the oft-repeated notion among some SLers that Facebook is somehow incompatible with Second Life merely because of Facebook's real name policy. But YouTube, Reddit, and Flickr allow (and to some extent encourage) pseudonyms, and they're nowhere near packing the same punch as my boy Zuckerberg. (No idea about VK.com, Russia's largest social network, but it's notably drawing more traffic than Plurk, which has a very active if relatively small group of SL users.)
Related to this, guess where people most go after visiting the Second Life website:
Yes, Facebook, more than even SL Universe, is where people go next.
Again, this is not to say Facebook is the be all/end all solution for Second Life -- after all, only 5% of traffic to the SL site is from any social network -- but hopefully this puts the end to the "Second Life and Facebook don't mix!" statements. (Though of course, it won't.)
Please share this post:
Second Life and Facebook most certainly don't mix and those of us who created pages but not Facebook accounts are being nagged by Facebook to create full accounts to continue to use our pages.

I'm not a fan of Facebook. Ho Hum.
When you consider how huge Facebook is and how tiny Second Life is by comparison, it seems that 5% of tiny really isn't that exciting.
I definitely wouldn't bet the future on 5%. (Though of course, some people will.)

This is a silly. Who goes from one website to another in a serial fashion much less in and out of SL that way. I generally have 3 or 4 windows open on my browser while I'm in SL. How do you tell where I'm going when I log off or when i close the SL.com window? I doubt I ever go to SLU from SL.com because their often both open in different tabs at the same time.

I will remain absent from facebook even if that means leaving Sl at a point if it comes to that.

Perhaps better to re post:
If, by madness or whatever; Linden Lab decided to make Second Life or Second Life 2 mandatory to have a Facebook account or if its users decided by themselves (and there are in fact a lot of music venues and others that have Facebook accounts) i would have to leave Sl or never join SL2.

What does this even mean? What does "social trafffic to Second Life" even refer to? Links from Facebook?
And how do they know "where people go after visiting the Second Life Website"? Are they doing cookie tracking?
Look, I use SL, I use FB. That doesn't mean I consider FB compatible with SL. I mean, I go to a church site on a regular basis. I also look at porn. Does that mean these are "compatible" somehow?
This just means FB is big. Really big. I mean, you think it's a long way from Ahern to Zindra. That's NOTHING compared to Facebook.

Facebook is evil. Avatars are not welcome there.

Suppose 6 people in an entire year used FB within SL, for whatever reason. And 3 people the used pluck.
You would then be able to say 67%of social network traffic in SL was to Facebook. And you'd be correct, even if the total number of bytes could fit on a single floppy drive.
I use FB. I don't use it through SL and my avatars account there is just laying around. while I'd like to use the avatar account, I have too many reservations about FB data on me as it is. So I keep my private life private - this includes what I do for recreation.
