I recently wrote about Improbable, the new startup building an engine for truly massive virtual worlds, and here's the first game project running on it:
This is Worlds Adrift, billed as a vast and open world explored with friends on airships. Here's more on the multiplayer/open world aspects:
Player interaction in Worlds Adrift is entirely freeform. We want you to always be wary when travelling or exploring. We anticipate a lot of interactions may be avoided purely because you take your home and base with you, so every player has something to lose if it breaks out into a fight. Keep in mind, though, that in a world of terrifying weather phenomena and vicious sky creatures, you may find the threat from other players is only one of your concerns... That said, we still want a huge cooperative adventure, so being able to group up and have your friends become part of your crew is something we want to make as easy as possible. While we haven’t got the exact system pinned down, we want a group of friends to either all start together on the same ship, or allow you to join a friend who’s already been playing the game for a while, in a small raft next to him. Of course, you may also opt to let the game place your group individually across the world, and make it your goal to find each other across the vast expanse of sky!
