Janine "Iris Ophelia" Hawkins' ongoing review of gaming and virtual world style
'Tis the season once again -- for The Arcade, I mean. Second Life's most popular gacha event will open its doors on Monday, June 1st, and designers are already starting to tease the sets they'll be offering in their gacha machines.
My favorite so far has to be the work-in-progress teaser posted above, a set of mesh corsets from Pixicat. Pixicat (both the brand and the designer) are known for clothing and accessories with a lot of detail work that's more than just texture deep. She's a phenomenally talented 3D modeler, and her work is always intricate and costume-like. She takes so much care with every swoop and swirl of her creations that these finished corsets are sure to be a must-have from the upcoming event. I mean, seriously, just look at them.
If you want to know more about The Arcade, keep your eyes on their website. In addition to having an event calendar, group info and all the latest news, it will be updated with a full catalog of what's available closer to the event's launch. As for Pixicat, you can check out more of her work (eventually including the finished corsets) in her Flickr gallery.
Janine Hawkins (@bleatingheart on Twitter, Iris Ophelia in Second Life) has been writing about virtual worlds and video games for nearly a decade, and has had her work featured on Paste, Kotaku, Jezebel and The Mary Sue.
The official group for the event is usually one of the first places to spot works in progress, too. ;-)

Wow. While looking undoubtedly lovely, is ALL that detail modeled with polygons?
It looks like these are made from so many tris that they would cause lag quite easily.

I came back to this page to look at these items a couple of times. There's something artistically thrilling about the details. SL women are so fortunate to get the lion's share of the good stuff.
I try to follow the rules of the lag police to keep the SL peace, much as I've done in RL with some Christians I've known. Joyless finger-pointing has it's place.
But sometimes it's the decadence that makes life worth living.

Except Christians are trying to convince you to believe in something that most likely does not exist.

For the record, while I am all in favor of a bit of joyless finger wagging, I think my question is a reasonable one.
In personal situations or quiet sims its not normally a problem. But in busy sims, wearing things with a high draw weight is a quick way to get shouted at by resource conscious admins. It happened to me, that's how I know about the issue.
I have bought some lovely mesh things, but some have turned out to be lag monsters. The way to know is to rez the item on the ground. If the item is 50+ PE, then its likely a lag causer. I have had items that were 200+ PE before!! :(

Issa, everything you say is correct.
Amish style, plain and simple, is best for resources.
Socially, we should all rock our Ruth. Anything beyond that is a slippery slope.

Not at all. Your just being silly. You can still make amazing stuff that is well optimized. Its not a one way street.
