On the 28th, Linden Lab actively promoted Bright Canopy's service for streaming Second Life on the web, which just launched last week. On the one hand, this is great, because the loss of OnLive's SL Go streaming service in April was a huge blow, and it would be lovely if Bright Canopy could rise to replace it. (Especially as early users are are mostly positive about the service.)
On the other hand, on August 31, Bright Canopy announced "We’re Gonna Need A Bigger Boat":
For launch, we had a great response from the community and lots of people coming to try things out. We had so many people, in fact, that some of our assumptions started to bend and then break. Bright Canopy is a tiny startup with limited resources. Our aforementioned spreadsheets had not prepared us for the response we saw... We’ve had so much response that we are going to have to make a change and offer a different plan to make sure we are sustainable and can be around long enough to take advantage of much more affordable hosting options from Frame in a few months.
So looks like there's a hunger for this service, if it can only scale. The company is currently not accepting new subscribers while they rejigger things, but there's good news for existing subscribers:
We are not going to charge anyone, anything for this weekend. It’s free, gratis, thanks for trying it out. No cards have been charged at all.
Hope the service gets stable so I can try it soon!
