Sad news for movie lovers via Variety today:
Tony Dyson, who built the “Star Wars” droid R2-D2, was found dead in his home on the Maltese island of Gozo, according to multiple media reports. He was 68. Dyson’s body was discovered after friends alerted police that they had not seen him for a number of days, the Times of Malta reported. There was no immediate suspicion of foul play and Dyson likely died of natural causes, the paper said.
Even more poignant news to the many Second Life users who knew and liked him through that virtual world. His avatar name was Azar Shelman (pictured above), and he was an active and supportive community member for many years, helping judge an SL machinima contest and making appearances on in-world celebrity shows, among many other activities. If you know of any wakes for Dyson to be held in SL, please post details in Comments below and I'll update this post with that info.
I have been lucky to have worked for him, and Chantal Harvey, as an illustrator for their Bobbekins project. He was a very kind man with lots of humour and will be missed by many!
