Pauline Oliveros performing with the Avatar Orchestra Metaverse
Pauline Oliveros, the very influential electronic music pioneer, died recently. Her friend Jeremy Turner posted a tribute to her which reminded me that Second Life was part of her many experiments in music -- she performed in the Avatar Orchestra Metaverse, which I recorded (above) and reported on back in 2007:
"[W]e upload samples and trigger them using HUDs on the screen," AOM member Bingo Onomatopoeia tells me. "In most songs we use a visualization-device worn on the back to make it seen who is playing a note. Using this technique, every orchestra-member becomes a moving instrument. In the instrument I call 'Onomatophone', there are six flying spheres that are filled with samples, that fly through the audience, creating a ever-changing mix that is unique for each listener."
Now that music historians and academics are documenting her contributions to electronic music, I hope they take the time to add her involvement in the Avatar Orchestra Metaverse.
Above, Pauline's avatar Free Noyes in SL -- read about it on Wirxli Flimflam's blog.

Pauline (Free Noyes in SL) continued to be active in Second Life way past 2007 (up until the end of her life, really), not only with the Avatar Orchestra Metaverse (Facebook group here — https://www.facebook.com/groups/2500767792/) but also in teaching and in other events such as the New Year's celebrations at the Odyssey arts sim (about which I last wrote here — http://zikiquesti.blogspot.com/2013/12/overnight-for-dreaming-avatars.html). While it's true that some of her early works were groundbreaking electronic pieces, she was better known for pioneering the concept of "deep listening."
