Hey you know those web links you see in the SL log-in screen when the world is loading? You know the ones, like this:
I was curious how many SLers actually click those links, because it always struck me as odd -- why would people click to a web page when they were in the middle of using a non-web client? Well, there's a way to track this, because it's a bit.ly link; just add a "+" at the end of any bit.ly link, and you get taken to the service's analytics for that page. Like so:
Quite a bit! "Dark Traffic" is bit.ly's way of quantifying traffic from unknown sources, so it's likely all of that above is coming from people visiting from a non-web source -- i.e., the Second Life viewer. (In this specific case, visits to this Second Life destination page.) 5,000+ clicks are quite a lot, especially as I believe this is only counting people who use the official SL viewer -- about 250,000 folks a month, which would be a clickthrough rate of some 2%, which is actually quite good in the world of Internet ads. (And certainly more than enough to load an SL location to full.)
What's this mean for Second Life sim owners and event managers? You really, really, really want to get your Destination listing on that log-in screen!
