Space, the upcoming Unity 3D-based virtual world from SL/OpenSim vets (a proud NWN sponsor!), has a new series of tutorials for its quest design system, including NPCs, player to NPC conversations trees, object collection, timed counters, and more. Notably, quests can also be designed to run across multiple regions. Developers can use all this to create an MMO/RPG game within Space, but educational and instructional applications are pretty obvious too. (Part one of the tutorial videos above; getting started instructions below.)
"The sinespace quest system supports branched narratives and custom scripted elements," as lead developer and sinespace CEO Adam Frisby tells me, "which allows it to be extended in useful and interesting ways for indie developers."
Second Life content creators who build quest-type mechanics in their sims might want to give it a look:
"For Second Lifers," Adam tells me, "this is a great thing for people building roleplay and narrative driven environments - since, combined with our NPC systems, they can create living breathing worlds, not just purely static architecture." Not coincidentally, Adam was once the SL land baron known as Adam Zaius, so you know he's creating the kind of system he himself would want to use.
Click here to get started; create a free creator account to start playing with the platform. To add the quest system to your sinespace scene, click in the inspector window in Unity, choose "Add Component" and then click "Quest Designer". Then add the Quest Designer to an empty game object in the scene. And as always, post any questions you have to Adam and his team in comments below!
