Interesting stats from game revenue analytics company Superdata, which contradict the commonly held belief that MMOs are over. In fact, in the PC market, 6 out of the top 10 money makers are MMOs: Fantasy Westward Journey Online II and Dungeon Fighter Online (both huge MMOs in Asia), World of Tanks (where player "avatars" are tanks), and World of Warcraft (13 years old and still earning!) Also in the top 10 is ROBLOX -- sort of a Second Life meets Minecraft sandbox MMO directed at teens and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, which is an MMO-ish in the DayZ vein:
PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) is a massively multiplayer online battle royal video game developed and published by Bluehole. The game is based on previous battle royal mods developed by Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene for other games, expanded into a standalone game under Greene's creative direction. In the game, up to one hundred players parachute onto an island and scavenge for weapons and equipment to kill others while avoiding getting killed themselves. The available safe area of the game's world decreases in size over a match, directing surviving players into tighter areas and forcing encounters. The last player or team standing wins the round.
The other top games are multiplayer combat, including Overwatch, which is in the top 10 because it's very popular with female gamers.
It's rather fascinating to note that Overwatch is the only game in these lists to have cross-platform Top-10 success of any sort, despite the fact that:
1) World Of Tanks is also available in a truncated but still entertaining version on XBox/Windows, and recent-model iOS and Android devices
2) Many of the games on the console list have at least passable ports to PC as well.
All the games on Mobile's top ten are also exclusive to mobile devices. Especially interesting to me is the popularity of Fate/Grand Order, basically a niche-appeal trading card game based on a long running anime/manga series. Niche-appeal, except for the fact that it's this popular.
The fact that many of these games are PvP-oriented or multiplayer also suggests people still want social contact even in the act of gaming. Developers should take note of this and cater to it when their budget and process allows.
