Targeting 100 million Android devices in the near term, Google's new ARCore platform inevitably competes against Apple's recently announced ARKit for iOS. Google's version:
[W]orks without any additional hardware, which means it can scale across the Android ecosystem. ARCore will run on millions of devices, starting today with the Pixel and Samsung’s S8, running 7.0 Nougat and above. We’re targeting 100 million devices at the end of the preview. We’re working with manufacturers like Samsung, Huawei, LG, ASUS and others to make this possible with a consistent bar for quality and high performance.
I'm convinced augmented reality has a far better chance to succeed than virtual reality, because it integrates more organically with devices we're already avidly using -- i.e. our smartphones. However, I can also argue the opposite case:
Smartphone owners most likely to be interested in augmented reality have already tried it with Pokemon GO, and overwhelmingly, they gave GO a try, shrugged, and quit. And because most consumers are likely to associate AR with Pokemon GO, they may disregard future AR apps as mere Pokemon GO knock-offs. Maybe not fair to dismiss a whole technology based on one product, but the market often isn't fair.
ARCode has been so useful. Kudos to Google!
