Cajsa Lilliehook covers the best in virtual world screenshot art and digital painting
When I was four, my sister decided to go to a Hitchcock double feature with Psycho and The Birds with her husband. Unfortunately, she was babysitting me and brought me along. I still have Psycho nightmares and a low (zero) tolerance for horror films. Nonetheless, I am fascinated by horror in Second Life – not enough to pursue that particular genre myself, but I do enjoy looking at other folk’s offerings.
I am entranced by freekency banx’s photostream. His work is often menacing, The opening photo and the one just above are both incredibly menacing. Sometimes his work his humorous and quirky. What really makes him a singular artist is the frequency with which he produces work that is both menacing and humorous. That’s a tough nut to crack.
Adra Braeden’s photos are foreboding and atmospheric. Rain, fog, and light are integral elements that add to the feeling of imminent hazard. He often takes photos of other people, so there is a lot of variety. He conveys emotions even in the simplest photos. Do spend time exploring his photostream. He has a consistent aesthetic that remains fresh from picture to picture.
Two more horror masters just below!
egopixel Deed creates a wild variety of photos yet they are all deeply weird. His subjects are not the usual monsters, vampires, and ghouls. It’s hard to describe his stream which is why the best idea is to click the link and dive in. One caveat, it is not safe for work.
Gryphon Vendetta is another artist with great variety from the spooky clown, a fairly common horror trope to demons and lady killers. However, Vendetta’s photostream is more action-oriented. There are all sorts of battle shots with subjects in midair, preparing to attack and full of exciting action.
This is another example from Vendetta which you can see is completely different. This is the kind of variety that makes a photostream fascinating. He has a blog called The Midnight Vendetta where he describes this photo as “A little bit of Lost Boys, a little bit of Blood The Last Vampire and a whole lot of anxiety.”
spookyboo puddleglum has a name that combines the macabre with the adorable, adoracabre, if you will. The photostream, however, is heavily weighted toward the macabre and the gruesome. However, there are bold, bright, colorful photos that are perfect horrors. Puddleglum proves you can terrify even with bright pinks and yellows.
Cajsa Lilliehook joined Second Life in 2007 and has been enjoying the art of SL ever since. Disliking the common practice of critiquing poor photos, she decided to highlight good ones and explain why they work in hopes of inspiring with praise instead of criticism.
