Second Life content creators have recently been roiled by the rumor of a nasty bug that might potentially threaten their livelihood: The bug, the rumor roughly goes, somehow enables an item to be duplicated into SL inventory after a service disruption. In recent days, belief that the bug indeed existed and was even being exploited by some content sellers burst wide into open contention:
“Last week a few creators, new ones, jumped on the bandwagon of certainty that this glitch is real and began a social media barrage,” as a well-established content creator summarizes the controversy to me. “Advising people not to buy gacha on the Marketplace and to start filing complaints to Linden Lab, as well to file complaints about resellers they are suspicious of.”
Perhaps in response to that, Linden Lab staffer Simon Linden addressed the rumor in an open in-world meeting of content creator earlier this week:
"Some of our recent internal fixes included changes to our backend systems which will no longer allow certain exploits used for duplicating no-copy content, and make it easier for us identify when anyone uses similar techniques in the future,” he told the group in a chat transcript I have reviewed. “We haven't solved all the problems outright, but we're making good strides."
For obvious reasons I’m not going to get into any further details of how the duplication can actually happen (at least as it’s rumored), but on this point, Simon’s advice is apropos: "We like to learn about any ways to make copies… if anyone has something to report, filing a security (SEC) Jira is the best way. We need as many details as possible so we can figure out what is going on.”
Probably a way better way to address this than any kind of witch hunty thing.

there have been various dupe bugs for many many years. typically LL tries to keep a lid on them by having people file SEC instead of normal jiras. there have also been issues by which you could make mesh items full perm. i know, i filed one of them myself.
anyone whose business model seriously depends on no copy items has had to implement their own duplication checker to identify illegitimate copies.
the only news here is they are publicly admitting it.
