Really interesting Ask Me Anything thread with Levio Serenity, a developer of the hugely successful Meeroos pet game and for MadPea's ambitious adventure games in Second Life. Turns out Levio has been a programmer for Fortune 500 companies who jumped at a chance to realize a childhood dream of designing games, starting with Meeroos, one of the first huge virtual pet game hits in Second Life (despite notorious griefing incidents). It's got great insights into running successful businesses in Second Life, because he's answering in-depth questions on the technical details -- such as this one on using Linden Script Language versus an external server to run the actual game code:
In general, if your business model can financially support a server, by all means I would move as much there as possible. Usually it's much easier to develop, test, and deploy in that environment. Bug fixes, updates or roll backs will be far easier to do in a central environment you control. Also you'll have logging and statistics from that you can pull from as needed.
Much more here -- and be sure to add new questions when you can!
