Decentraland, the ambitious, open standards-based social VR world which raised $25 million by selling virtual land plots in exchange for Ethereum last August, just opened up a job board for 3D content creators which also pays in Ethereum:
Ethlance is a job market platform built entirely on the blockchain which uses cryptocurrency for payments. Thanks to those technologies, the platform can sustainably run with 0% service fees. Ethlance will never take a cut from transactions between freelancers and employers... Once you’ve registered using the process outlined above, clients will soon come your way! As a side note, our virtual land auction is about to end (see stats), and people have bought over $25M USD worth of virtual land, so we can expect a very high demand for skilled 3D artists.
I'm curious how many professional-level content creators will actually commit to doing actual work paid for with a volatile virtual currency that's hardly being used to buy actual goods and services. Bitcoin and other blockchain-based virtual currencies have attracted a strong niche of speculators, but one key test of a new money genuinely having genuine utility as money is whether people will pour the time and sweat of their labor in exchange for it.
By contrast, thousands of skilled 3D artists create content in exchange for Linden Dollars in Second Life -- but then again, the L$ exchange rate has, by design, always remained relatively stable, and Linden Dollars are much easier to convert into US dollars.
Decentraland the San Francisco-based company, by the way, is hiring actual staff (see bottom of this post), but presumably those people get paid in cold hard cash.
Sort of interesting, and some spare time so lets see:
Install an extension for a browser I don't use (well, there is a Brave version so ok, quick temp install, can wipe after)
Register a profile and add yadda yadda seems standard.
Send imaginary money.....oh look it can be reimbursed. (Jumps to comments aha so between 1 and 20 bucks -ish depending. Oops)
Do stuff ("clients will soon come your way!")
Invoice customer by sending more imaginary money..what?
Thanks, think I will stick to something a little simpler : cash/barter for RL services, couple of bucks to paypal via Kitely from time to time and Lindens for inworld stuff, if thats OK. Note to crypto people : these are all I can use right now.
