OK this is pretty amazing -- YouTuber "Vern Real" downloaded 3D models and characters from The Simpsons from various online sources, and recreated the show's classic "Steamed Hams" scene with Principal Skinner and Superintendent Chalmers on his High Fidelity server. The real kicker, as Vern tells me, is the lip sync and character movements were recreated "live" in High Fidelity with two actors wearing avatar models of Skinner and Chalmers, who fully acted out their performance with Vive motion trackers:
"[T]he hardest part was not the lip sync but getting the lip sync and the body movements at the right time," Vern Real explains. "For example, Skinner's head is a lot bigger than a human head, so when I thought I was tapping my chin I was actually putting my finger in my nose. Most shots were two people -- an actor and a camera guy/director feeding the actor the lines and making sure the movement looks right. For the scenes where we needed two actors, we grabbed a friend." For the motion capture, he adds, "We used the standard config for High Fidelity -- one puck on the chest, one on the lower back, and one strapped to each foot."
The end result is creepy and hilarious at the same time. I can easily see this becoming an early killer app for High Fidelity among the kind of YouTubers who made VRChat relatively popular through videos featuring avatars modeled after classic game/movie/TV/anime characters -- only with High Fidelity, much more expressively.
Hat tip: High Fidelity founder and Steamed Hams fan Philip Rosedale:
Mmm, #SteamedHams. And this was filmed live in @highfidelityinc #VR using @htcvive trackers. Nice. https://t.co/P8uv9qmXGg
