Previous trailers delved more deeply into the larger adventure story and the dystopian future world described in Ernest Cline's novel, but this one focuses almost entirely on the metaverse known as the OASIS -- the relationship between people and their avatars, the reasons they use it, and the friendships they create with each other when they're there, eerily evoking Second Life's original tagline: "Your world, your imagination."
I'm curious why Warner Brothers' marketing team took this direction. It's quite possible that focus groups expressed the most interest in the OASIS -- or just as likely, expressed confusion over what the OASIS is supposed to be. (And yes, I thought about saying the trailer seems like a commercial for Sansar, since after all that's a VR-centric virtual world and it has as an official Ready Player One tie-in, but the content and social features haven't yet been built out enough to make that analogy accurate.)
